Every year, JA of Lincoln hands out scholarships to some of Lincoln’s best and brightest high school seniors. We’re particularly proud of the 2012 crop, and we think you’ll be impressed with them too. Over the next few weeks we’d like to introduce them to you individually, in hopes that they’ll inspire hope for the future in you in the same way they did for us. We begin with Jigme Rinchen, winner of the $750 Pepsi-Cola Scholarship.
For Jigme, just graduating from high school would have been an accomplishment in itself. His parents immigrated to Nebraska from Bhutan, and neither of them went to college. As as young student, Jigme says that alone often presented him with a challenge. He writes, “Other kids who didn’t understand something in school could just go to their parents and ask, ‘How do I do this?’ But I had to do everything on my own, which taught me not to rely on others and to rely on myself.”
Evidently, Jigme found more than enough motivation within himself to succeed. He graduates from Lincoln Southwest High School with a 4.1 GPA, an impressive list of advanced classes, and plans to earn a degree in computer science. He’s also a veteran of JA’s Titan, Ethics, and Entrepreneurship programs, which have set him well on his way toward his ultimate goal of starting his own computer business.
Thank you Pepsi for allowing us to recognize this wonderful student and give him a little help as he sets off toward his bright future. And congratulations to Jigme &nash; we’re all rooting for you!
